Forgiveness: The Power and the Puzzles by Wendell E. Miller ministered to me personally as I read the original manuscript. I was introduced to fresh insights in the biblical doctrine of forgiveness. By careful preparation and clear presentation, the author has made available the most complete and comprehensive study of a much misunderstood doctrine. This book is a must for every pastor and teacher of God's Word. Thank you, Wendell Miller, for granting me the privilege of reading the unpublished manuscript.

Bitterness is a cancer that erodes spiritual vitality. The lack of a willingness to forgive or improper applications of "forgiveness" are the cause. Biblical Counselor and Bible student, Wendell Miller, has provided excellent insights into this pertinent subject.

We live in a day when we are regularly fighting the problem of the pendulum. There is nowhere that this is more evident than the doctrine of forgiveness. Incomplete and inaccurate interpretation causes some to see no place for further forgiveness once one is born again, on the one hand, and failure to understand judicial or forensic forgiveness causes others to live in perpetual insecurity on the other hand. I am delighted to endorse your treatise on the biblical doctrine of forgiveness as the clearest, most complete, and well-balanced I have read. It has been helpful to me in capsulizing an explanation to others. . . Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Foreword

I would venture a guess that ninety-nine percent of the Christians alive today have never thought through the multi-faceted doctrine of forgiveness presented in Forgiveness: the Power and the Puzzles.

Though I have been a Christian for forty-eight years, have had twelve years of training for ministry in college, seminary, and graduate school, and have preached and taught the Word of God weekly for almost forty years, I have never discovered in my studies the marvelous program of forgiveness that Wendell Miller has discovered in God's Word.

How many have wrestled with the apparent conflict of instruction between Mark 11:25 and Luke 17:3? In the former, forgiveness is to be immediate and unconditional whereas in the latter it is conditioned by rebuke and repentance. These are two quite different instructions. But the differences don't stop there. A close study of Scripture reveals six different situations involving forgiveness. What a beautiful panorama is presented when they are all seen from their God-ordained perspective.

Truly, the inerrant Word of God demonstrates the absence of contradiction when we "study to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen who do not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15).

But this study not only demonstrates the doctrinal consistency of Scripture; it opens up and clarifies a way of success in exercising discipline and enjoying forgiveness and restoration to usefulness in the family of God.

I praise the Lord for the help I have received and I pray that multitudes will gain light and help from this careful study.
